Federal/National Organizations

Advisory Council on Historic Federal Preservation. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is an independent Federal agency created by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), and is the major policy advisor to the Government in the field of historic preservation.

American Planning Institute. The American Planning Association and its professional institute, the American Institute of Certified Planners, are organized to advance the art and science of planning and to foster the activity of planning -- physical, economic, and social -- at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites. Founded in 1987 by a group of historians deeply concerned over the irresponsible development and eradication of America's Civil War battlefields, the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites is a membership-driven national non-profit organization headquartered in Hagerstown, Maryland. APCWS acts to preserve and protect these hallowed grounds by directly purchasing the property or negotiating protective easements.

Cyburbia. Cyburbia contains a comprehensive directory of Internet resources relevant to planning, architecture, urbanism and other topics related to the built environment.

Heritage Preservation. Heritage Preservation is a key partner in Save America's Treasures, a national program to save our nation's past for the coming millennium.

League of Historic American Theaters (LHAT). The League is a national member service organization which supports and facilitates the rescue, restoration, and reuse of historic theaters.

National Archive and Records Administration. The National Archive's mission is to ensure ready access to essential evidence that documents the rights of American citizens, the actions of federal officials, and the national experience.

National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. NCPTT promotes and enhances the preservation and conservation of prehistoric and historic resources in the United States for present and future generations through the advancement and dissemination of preservation technology and training.

National Park Service: Heritage Preservation: Heritage Preservation Services. A web site offering information on preservation planning, grants, tax credits, training, news, mapping and legislation.

National Park Service: Links to the Past. A comprehensive listing of links relating to Historic Preservation. Subjects include archaeology, educational materials, architecture, landscapes and many more preservation related categories.

National Trust for Historic Preservation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, chartered by Congress in 1949, is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting historic resources. It fights to save historic buildings and the neighborhoods and landscapes they anchor through education and advocacy.

NTHP's Main Street Center. Provides information and resources on the Main Street program of downtown revitalization through historic preservation and economic development.

Partners for Sacred Places. This organization promotes the stewardship and active community use of America's older and historic religious properties.

Preservation Action. Founded in 1974, Preservation Action advocates federal legislation to further the impact of historic preservation at the local, state and national levels.

Preservation Online. The web version of Preservation, the award-winning magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In addition to excerpts from the magazine, breaking preservation news is added to the site each working day.

Preserve/Net Information and Law Service. The site you've come to rely on for all things preservation, Preserve/Net has hosted nearly 3,500,000 connections since going online in December of 1994. Preserve/Net Law Service is designed to aid lawyers, activists and owners in understanding the law as it relates to preservation.

US/ICOMOS. The U.S. National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (US/ICOMOS) fosters heritage conservation and historic preservation at the national and international levels through education and training, international exchange of people and information, technical assistance, documentation, advocacy, collaboration with other organizations, and other activities consistent with the goals of ICOMOS.

Library of Virginia. Serving the Archival and Research Needs of Virginians Since 1823.

Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The Department of Conservation and Recreation enhances natural and recreational resources through land management planning, funding, education and regulation.

Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources maintains information on the Commonwealth's historic architecture and archaeological sites. It is the mission of the Department to foster, encourage, and support the stewardship of Virginia's significant historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources.

Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is dedicated to improving the quality of communities in Virginia.

Virginia General Assembly. A site with links to the State Assembly, the Legislative Information System and the Commonwealth Net Server.

Virginia Tourism Corporation. This site serves the Virginia travel industry by telling you who the VTC is and how you can participate in our efforts to promote tourism in Virginia.

Private NonProfits

Virginia Conservation Network. The Virginia Conservation Network (VCN) is devoted to advancing a common, environmentally sound vision for Virginia. Created in 1990, the Network's membership is comprised of more than 100 groups committed to protecting Virginia's natural resources.

Virginia Environmental Endowment. The mission of Virginia Environmental Endowment is to improve the quality of the environment by encouraging all sectors to work together to prevent pollution, conserve natural resources, and promote environmental literacy. Grantmaking priorities encompass sustainable communities, water quality protection and management, and environmental education. Although accorded a national scope by our charter, the Endowment currently limits awards to eligible nonprofit organizations for programs conducted in the state of Virginia and in the Kanawha and Ohio River Valleys of Kentucky and West Virginia.
